x Marshallengraved I have spent a lot of time defending Eminem against Benzino's accusations of racism. Not only because I like Eminem, but more because I am deeply convinced those accusations are used by a man who was eager to break Eminem's career for his own publicity.
People have been arguing with me: " You defend Marshall Mathers, but have you even listened to his "Foolish Pride song"?"
Yes, I have. Do I like this song? No, of course I don't! I find it awful, not only lyrically, but also instrumentally. The "Oh Oh Foolish Pride" chorus exasperates me.
If I didn't know this song was from Eminem, I wouldn't even be able to recognize his voice.
Obviously, it is the unsure work of a beginner. "Suckering rhymes" that were not even intented for publication... the work of a young man between 16 and 21. I know some people will also argue there is a huge difference between being 16 years old and 21 years old. Sorry, but that's not the point. If you had recorded all kind of stupidities I have said between 16 and 21 and if you suddenly exposed it to the public, I am pretty sure you'd manage to embarass me.
Foolosh Pride is a dumb song. The work of a young man whose black girlfriend's attitude had left frustrated and who retaliated verbally the wrong way.
In fact, Eminem should have singled out this girl, not her race. I don't defend him on that point. This was obviously a mistake, for which he apologized and that he recalls in his Yellow Brick Road song.
As Evelyn Mc Donnell intelligently points it out, Eminem points out the importance of interracial relationships between black and white men:
''When blacks and whites take different sides, unity never happens and we will subside...''
A point that destroys Benzino's theory about Eminem's racism anyway.
Ok, what will follow really sucks:
''Blacks and whites sometimes mix, but black girls only want your money because they're dumb chicks.`So I'ma say like this: Don't date a black girl.''
The line above expresses Marshall's disgust of a black girl he had just broken up. This line is stupid, because even if you have been disappointed by 100 even 1000 Blacks, you are not allowed to stereotype their race.
Marshall was very wrong to do so. He is conscious of it. Let's also take into account that this song was written long before Marshall's recoring career. This is amateurish stuff that -even if it didn't contain racial slurs- could be considered as weak stuff from a plain beginner.
Eminem has made a mistake and he has apologized. So is Marshall Mathers forgivable? To me, the answer is clearly yes.
Not only because he was "young and stupid", as he himself states it, but also because he has spent his whole life with black people and always shown his will to integrate the black community. Through his music and despite the racial tensions that were prevailing in Detroit, Marshall has been a positive contribution for the black community. Not to mention that most of his friends and collaborators are black.
On one hand, Benzino reproachs Eminem to be blatent racist (people who know precise facts about Eminem will understand how fake those accusations are), on the other hand, he gets mad at his Tupac tributes, which seems self explanatory of the Source's co-owner's racial attitude about white men in the rap game.

You may argue that I am a white woman defending Eminem. Yes, it is true. But my kids have black blood running through their veins and I wouldn't buy Eminem's Cds if I thought that he was a racist, which is obviously not the case.
Let the Foolish Pride song where it belongs (in the trash) and keep enjoying Eminem's music.
