x Universal Sea after they were the single biggest musical influence in my life for many years, I admit I have been off the metallica train for a few years now.. the attitude and the very basic fact their music the past 10-15 years has largely been brutally poor. i've just downloaded the first release off their new Death Magnetic album and it's worse than I could have imagined. They continue to fall astray off the path where Load messed them up. Bad vocals, stupid lyrics, not much guitar breating space, simple riffs, crap drumming that has simply not evolved. What was good to hear when the vocals end... a nice extended Hammett solo and guitar charge down. They should have more of this - instrumentals. That was enjoyable.

I might check them out live once or twice more in my life as I'm sure they're not going anywhere but I'm over them. They should pack it in... or do something like Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts album, which were all instrumentals.

Music is about music, and vocals are just one instrument that should complement everything else. When that instrument is off the music is ruined, and I think its been a weak spot in Metallica since the Black album.

OK this makes it sound a lot better. Of those 7 songs on the album, surely there is one I'll approve of...

x Billy_Tascademo Is this the one you were talking about?

It's fucking horrible!

The frightening thing is that you could replace the footage with Nickleback playing for the first 4 mins, and you'd never know the difference.

x Universal Sea no, oddly that's a different one

it sounds like Unforgiven 3 mixed in with various Load sounds and yes Nickleback

Metallica back to their track 4 ballads, the difference being.. its not even in the same beer league as One, Sanitarium, the original Unforgiven, Fade to Black..

I can see this being popular live

then comes the breakdown... where Hetfield of course must sing over it. once his vocals go its half interesting.. it's like they heard all the criticism the past decade and said, "lets go back to long songs with different parts and wacky solos", to show we still have it.

I'm sure MTV will love the 8 minute track

I dunno..

it's not bad, it's not exactly exciting me either.
I think hetfield has become a better singer over the years, although as for content, who knows. I'm listening to the riffs.

a couple of moments in that song, plus about 6 minutes of indifference.

I agree, that might sound really good live and loud. as long as there is a good PA and room acoustics. many venue's turn the loud fast bands into mush.
