I didn’t realise at the mere age of seven, and attending my very first Millwall game, that a lifetime of stereotyping and abuse awaited me.
Millwall isn’t without it’s hooligan element, a sad but true fact, and when incidents occur like the riots at Luton town fc and with Birmingham city fc the media has the right to report it, but they should ensure they have all the facts before doing so, for instance…
Millwall v Birmingham (2001/2002 season second leg of the playoffs) the media states the riots occurred as Birmingham beat us 1-0, the fact is this was an organised riot, as sadly many of them are. Police found petrol stored in local flats along with wood and bricks ready to be used as weapons and missiles, this wasn’t spontaneous, this was a premeditated, organised, malicious riot and there are many ‘hooligan’ websites where the organising of such incidents occur.
Another fact, a policeman wrote into a newspaper stating he saw known hooligan faces from several premiership clubs, who with no games left themselves, knew this was a must be at tear up, and though I’d never deny the Millwall scum were the majority, it does prove it wasn’t just Millwall involved. The last fact is from eyewitnesses in and outside the ground, those of us inside saw flares going off, those outside reported fighting before Birmingham scored the goal that saw us knocked out.
The media also like to overuse the footage of our incident at Luton town fc (1985) whenever there is football related violence, our footage is flashed up on the TV and the old photo’s make the papers, it doesn’t involve us in any way and therefore we shouldn’t be continually linked to it. The Evening standard made an apology to Millwall for including Millwall fans in a cartoon about louts in Faliraki, the louts were being labelled the new breed of football thugs, this is a section of the apology…
“ This was the reason I added a football element to the cartoon, why I chose Millwall god only knows, but I suppose cartoons are largely reliant on stereotypes, and unfortunately the stereotype of the Millwall thug persists, even if the reality has changed”
Our song ‘ no-one likes us-we don’t care ’ came about because of the negative press we always receive, I am not against the scum being named and shamed, but they tar us all with the same brush, when most of the true fans are law abiding, hardworking, decent people. Millwall never get the positive press with all the good they do like what they do for the elderly in the community, the football schools they run in schools, the schools they run for disadvantaged kids, the fun days and parties they hold for children, the players visiting sick children in hospital and taking them presents, the true fans deserve positive press too, when our striker Neil Harris was diagnosed with Testicular cancer, we was the first to organise a charity walk, and various other charity events so the money could be used to raise awareness, it is still ongoing. We raise money for the local children’s homes, we raised money for an ex player who needs life saving treatment abroad, and who had spent his entire savings trying to get there but needed more, we raised money for another ex player who’s young son collapsed and died, the money will be used for research into the condition.
Millwall have worked endlessly to rid itself of the thug tag that plagues us, introducing the ID cards was a blessing, as was the banning of certain teams to our ground and us to theirs, though a lot of the true fans didn’t like being punished for what the scum do. All I ask of the media is to leave the past behind, what’s done is done, we cannot change it, but we can change what happens in the future, so the next generation of ‘wall’ fans can be proud to be just that, people will not hate them just for supporting their local team. Would I ever stop going because of the thug tag? Never! Us true fans will not let the scum win or let the media grind us down, we are passionate and loyal until the end, and with some positive press for all the good Millwall are doing to rid of the scum maybe, just maybe it will make a difference for the future fans of the greatest game invented.

m that post was very good,my mums dad was a millwall fan,she gre up with some of the labelled violence, ive heard allsorts of stories,i do sympathise with you coz its true about the media and millwall coz of old hooliganism they use it against a club which doesnt seem to have it as much anymore as far as i know anyway! but yeah ive seen footage of certain riots of 1984 i think and heard about it in papers of word of mouth,it may have had a nasty background as a club many years ago but its changed since then, stupid fucking newspapers, big load of wank!

M as a blues fan I know exactly what you are talking about. With the likes of Millwall and Blues as an example if there is any trouble at matches it is hooliganism of the highest order BUT you go to Manure or an Arsehole match its passion running high. Unfortunatly this is the biased "smaller" clubs have to put up with from the press.
EVERY clubs have their fare share of hooligans and the only way it is ever going to stop is if true fans put a stop to it, if fans make it clear they won't tloerate it from thier own.
Riots happened today outside St Andrews after the Blackburn match and im sure the Birmingham scum :S will get the blame.
A blackburn fan threw a coin at a blues player and it hit Brad Friedel instead and yet again i'm sure a blues fan will get the blame.
Sorry mindless rambling, i seem to have lost the plot!!
