x The great days of a great year saw these fine sounds we all hope you enjoy. x
x Sea VOLUMFM 2003 - Compilation of the sounds of 2003 Toronto, Canada - 2003 was a great year for independent music that came through UMFM, and we wish to commemorate this by releasing a special compilation CD of your favourite UM artists. The target launch date is February 6th 2004, to coincide with UMagazine's third anniversary.

Featured artists (in rough order of when UMFM first heard them)

- Techture (USA)
- The Numb Project (USA)
- CHROME (Canada)
- Deita Klaus (USA)
- The Hungry Ghost (USA)
- Thumpermonkey (UK)
- Montana Pete (UK)
- Marc Gorcey (Canada)
- High Alert Status (USA)
- Gary Jennings (USA)
- Dein Schatten (Germany)
- Root Deco (USA)

...and your favourite diddies and clips of the year.

These artists typified the independent music movement, concerned not with money, or copyright licensing, or the other shady side of the music industry, but of their creations and their communication to spread their messages.

x Some compilation notes x
x Universal Sea This is for the bands and artists who submitted material to UMFM and were excluded from this CD. Here are some of my reasons for exclusions:

1) If I suspected bands/artists were more concerned about cash flow than about the free promotional aspect of this project

2) If the band/artist was signed to a label where there would be any level or red tape or legalities involved in the process

3) If the band/artist made any request pertaining to licensing tracking of their tracks receiving airplay on UMFM (e.g. ASCAP, SOCAN, etc)

4) If the music was not particularly inspiring or adventurous in general.

5) If there was a lack of communication with the artist over time

Yes, we left off some terrific acts and music for various reasons. But I do think our lineup is ideally representative of recent creations from last year and of the genres/styles popular to the UMFM listeners in 2003.

And I would like to encourage more female artists to submit their material to UMFM in 2004.

x One more addition x
x Universal Sea We are cheating a little bit to fill the 4-minute void we have remaining on the CD to add a great song from an American psy-rock band, Root Deco.

I hope to manufacture the CDs on Friday and get them ready for the big release of the compilation on Feb 6th.

If you want a copy you can start submitting your orders through UMessager or through email (visit umfm.net for the appropriate contact address). The CD is free, but you have to take care of the shipping costs.

x Update x
x Universal Sea The first run of CDs have been duplicated. The design and printing on the one master looks awesome... we will print the rest on Wednesday and the special ones will be sent off to our artists on Thursday morning.

Then anybody wanting one from Friday onwards can get one off us. I regret not charging a buck or two per copy but so long as this completely unplanned idea doesn't bankrupt me, we should be fine and dandy.

I am keeping the final track order a secret until the official release. Some artists had two tracks, one had three, and there are many more who get one. It is all about fitting in, no egos, true spirit of wilderness love joy and respect.

x Universal Sea First wave of order links and shipping costs coming on Monday.

I apologise, we had a technical meltdown at the printer's. We sent five on request without the printing, with orders all over the place.

We will get our ass in gear, Monday is Sea's work/day off.

x Universal Sea I will try working from 9-lunchtime on Mondays, then the rest is mine. Fits in the work for half a week, play for half a week mentality. Equal balance is essential to shape one's growth. Specialisation fails anybody who can't quickly learn a new, totally contrasting skill that would one day say others' lives.

x Jess I'm uploading the proper disc art to the server shortly. Whatever was there before wasn't meant to be used and distributed.

I will also include some documentation with it. You'll need Winzip to open it. I am trying to do a pdf version so people who don't have the latest version of illustrator can print them. Unfortunately, the text looks like crap when I do.. I might have to add it later on.

x Universal Sea I'm disappointed but not overly surprised that more people haven't said Thumpermonkey was their favourite artist off the compilation. The people getting back to me have been more mainstreamish, older or not so heavy oriented. Because of that, I like the fact they have to suffer through three TM tracks.

Many people like Deita Klaus and the Numb Project though.
