A virginal experience of traditional london ware |
 |
 |
A traditional London fare and one that I have never sampled…..until today that is. A colleague of mine is getting married in a couple of weeks and he took some of us out to his favourite pie and mash place in Exmouth market in Clerkenwell as a kind of pre-wedding outing. I have to say it was with some trepidation that I went and I also chickened out from having jellied or boiled eel (although I have had jellied eel before and quite like it) but I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. The café itself could have been trapped in a time warp and I doubt it’s décor or cooking methods have changed much since the 1930’s. The menu isn’t extensive; you can have pie and mash, boiled eel and mash, jellied eel and mash or mash and mash, all with an optional helping of Liquor. Which brings me nicely to this most mysterious of food stuffs (well, mysterious to me anyway) – Liquor. For some reason I had always imagined it to be thick and black like treacle and made from the dregs of year old animal fat left festering in a dark corner (I obviously confused ‘Liquor’ with ‘dripping’ which is effectively old animal fat that people actually eat in sandwiches. WW2 has a lot to answer for) but no, Liquor is a creamy parsley sauce which is a kind of green gravy…..how about that! So, I had a meat pie, possibly minced beef (it was hard to tell), two scoops of mash and a generous smattering of Liquor. And very nice it was too.

interesting.. |

Thanx for that.. I've had bbq eel in sushi which was quite tasty but I'm not sure I'd want to try it boiled and jellied.
Also, it funny that the word liquor takes on different meanings.. In Quebec, "liqueur" actually refers to soda like coke, sprite, etc.. We thought it was hilarious some places advertising burger, poutine and liqueur for $4.99!

What can be more stomach turning than fermented duck eggs with baby chicks in them?! I have GOT to know. Normally I like Chinese food... or should I say Mandrian, Cantonese, and American Chinese. I haven't had much else in Chinese quisine.

There's a pie and mash shop just around the corner from where I now live. When the detox is over, I'm going in. There's always a big queue outside, gotta be a good sign
