City - My place of a lifetime

Not all virtual, City has helped me with my life in difficult times.

I suppose this has been a long time coming. I found, much to my surprise, that Sea had put Biopolis back on the UM City map. I've studied and worked in three different continents, lived in 6 cities in the past year and a half, but non have given me as much as UM. Some reading this for the first time may think I've probably got a few screws loose (which I don't deny, by the way). 'Its just and Internet community', you may say. To be honest, UM is so much more to me personally. I haven't exactly been here much since I married Jes on 21 June 2004, but I think I can honestly say that UM has helped me move on with my life.

There's a lot that people in this community don't know about me, and I'm not about to go into it in great detail. I hit a really low point some time in Dec 2003 - Feb 2004, and three people helped me through it. I doubt I'd even be alive today without their support, having had my own fight with the disease I work my every living day to defeat.

To that end I should say now my long overdue thanks to Sea and especially Jess. Sea for his rather brusque (and highly efective, may I say) of whipping sense into people, and fo speaking his mind regardless of what the outcome may be. I get incensed and overreact very easily, thanks for not giving a shit :).

Jess: thanks for always being there when either Jes or I needed an ear. I believe and I see every day that there is nothing more important in the fight for life than knowing that someone cares, and I believe both you and Jes provided that for me.

I'm short on words today, which is probably good for anyone reading. I once heard Sea say UM was built so that people could get on with their lives after they'd had their fun here (I know its a general misquote), and I truly believe you've accomplished just that. I live my life now very happily, and I'm content. Realistically, I don't ever think I'll find the cure for cancer in my lifetime, but all I want to do is to help - for Michelle and for everyone who has gone before her.

Most importantly, I'm very happily married to the man who has been there since the start. I've had my foolish notions about waiting till after graduation, premarital sex, etc, but to be honest, things here have probably helped me get over all the social preconceptions the Singapore government beats into you from day 1. Some people say marriage at 20 is too young, I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck now. I love Jes, and I'm happy.

Wherever I go from here - it will always be in the back of my mind that I'm only here today through the people I met through UM, and that I'll always have a place to rant should I need it.
